Easy autumn home décor trends for 2024

As the colder weather settles in and the days grow shorter, our homes become a haven for cosy nights on the sofa and evenings indoors with family and friends, so what better opportunity to embrace the change of the season and transform your home for autumn?

The latest Pinterest Autumn Trend Report predicted cosy and soothing homes are going to be in demand this season, with classics like soft lighting back again for another year and new features like hues of blue and sage making their way into our autumn home must-haves. Here’s how you can bring some key trends into your home this season:

1. Soothing colours

You can quickly create a comforting and autumnal feeling at home by incorporating a colour palette that reflects the change we see in nature during the season. Think soft throws, pillows and rugs in rich shades of terracotta, forest green, burnt orange and golden ochre. Colours like this bring a sense of depth and warmth to any space and work particularly well in bedrooms and living rooms.

2. Go green

Similar to the soothing colours trend, but perhaps even more prominent, the green décor trend is still a firm favourite across the interior décor board and, according to Pinterest, on the rise with an over 2,000% increase across Pinterest's search. Green may seem daunting at first, but depending on the hue you choose, it can be incorporated into your home as easily as any neutral. If you’re wanting to create a cosy, cocoon-like space, try a deeper forest green. If your style leans towards more calming, almost spa-like energy, sage green is the perfect addition.

3. Lower the lighting

Lighting can completely transform the mood of your space and for a cosy autumn vibe, soft ambient lighting is essential. Give the big light a break and instead go for lamps, candles and fairy lights that offer the perfect warm, golden glow, creating the perfect snug backdrop to evenings enjoyed at home.

4. Floral aesthetics

While florals are often associated with spring and summer, the floral trend for autumn 2024 is all about darker, moodier floral patterns that bring a fun yet sophisticated elegance to a space. It might seem daunting but you can easily add pops of this trend into your home with bedding and throw pillows – think floral patterns in rich autumn colours like burgundy, navy or green. You can also bring some florals to your space with wall art or decorative pieces such as dried floral arrangements.

5. Create cosy corners

No autumn-ready home is complete without a cosy corner. Whether it's somewhere to unwind with a book, sip a warm drink, or simply enjoy some peace, as we start to spend some more time at home during the colder months, a small tucked-away space to snuggle up and relax is essential. Make sure to add layers of soft blankets, throws and pillows that will keep you comfortable and warm, and incorporate some soft, diffused lighting to add an extra layer of ambience.

6. Hues of blue and sage

One of the stand-out trends of the season is the tranquil combination of blue and sage. Blue, which is often associated with calmness pairs beautifully in the home with the natural energy of sage green. If you’re looking to try this trend and really commit you could consider painting a feature wall in a soft pale blue and adding an element of green to your choice of furniture. For those wanting a more simple change opt for soft furnishings like pillows and blankets, or décor like vases and prints to add subtly incorporate the trend into your home.
