Knights’ trail leads to award for Lincolnshire housebuilder

A Lincolnshire housebuilder has won an award for its work with a local primary school on the Lincoln Knights’ Education Trail.

Chestnut Homes, which is based in Langworth, near Lincoln, picked up an Investors in Education Award for its work with Dunholme St Chad’s Church of England Primary School.

Presented by Lincoln-based social enterprise EBP, the award recognises exceptional work with schools and young people.

Chestnut Homes, along with Core Architects, sponsored a mini knight statue which was painted by pupils from across the school working in consultation with local artist Mel Langton, to mark the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln.

Under the guidance of volunteers Emma Hackney and Derrick Hopson, the children decorated the statue, named Sir Armour, with a series of images representing their skills, talents and aspirations.

Their designs were inspired by the story of lady constable Nicola De Lay Hay, who bravely defended Lincoln Castle from French and rebel English forces during the Battle of Lincoln.

Sir Armour was part of the Lincoln Knights’ Education Trail, a collection of more than 40 statues decorated by local schools.

The trail made its debut at the Lincolnshire Show and the sculptures were displayed at various locations across the city throughout the summer.

Chestnut Homes was nominated for the award by Patricia Ruff, Headteacher at Dunholme St Chad’s Church of England Primary School, who said: “To be involved in the Lincoln Knights’ Education Trail was a wonderful experience for our pupils, as the project provided them with an opportunity to share their aspirations, ambitions and talents. In addition, they learnt about the design process and experienced the thrill of publicly exhibiting their work.

“We are extremely grateful to Chestnut Homes for enabling us to take part in this worthwhile project and I am delighted that they have won this award, which is thoroughly deserved.”

David Newton, Managing Director of Chestnut Homes, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award in recognition of our work with Dunholme St Chad’s on the Lincoln Knights’ Education Trail.

“It was a real pleasure to sponsor the school’s mini knight and to work with the pupils to bring this momentous chapter in Lincoln’s history to life, and we are honoured to be recognised in this way for our contribution.”
