Schoolchildren lay the foundations for future careers

A group of primary school pupils visited a housing development near Boston to find out more about a career in sales and marketing.

The Year 5s, from Wyberton Primary School, were invited to Chestnut Homes’ The Quadrant development, off Tytton Lane East, Wyberton, as part of the school’s annual careers week. The week links to the school’s business and enterprise curriculum and explores topics such as making a presentation, money, leadership and responsibility, taking risks, decision making, problem solving and teamwork, with the aim of raising the children’s aspirations. The children were asked to write an application for the job of their choice, with successful applicants being given the chance to explore different careers. The six children visited the showhomes in the show village at The Quadrant and met sales advisor Kamila Brigden as well as marketing manager Stephanie Tilley.

Gemma Hodgson, Assistant Headteacher at Wyberton Primary School, said: “We’d like to thank Chestnut Homes for supporting this initiative. We find the week to be very beneficial to the children – encouraging them to set goals and have dreams for the future. “The children really enjoyed their visit to The Quadrant and found it very interesting looking around the showhomes and speaking to members of staff on site.”

David Newton, Managing Director of Chestnut Homes, said: “We were only too pleased to help support careers week at Wyberton Primary School. “We’ve already built a good relationship with the school, having donated high-visibility vests to them as part of Walk to School week earlier this year, and it was lovely to welcome the pupils to the development and give them an insight into the world of work.”
