6 easy ways to make your house a home this Christmas

The Christmas countdown has begun, and with it comes the wonderful chaos of gift-buying, festive food shopping sprees and a series of glittering celebrations.

But while you’re busy juggling your shopping lists and considering all those party invitations, it can be easy to overlook what is essentially the star of the show - your home.

The festive season is all about spending time with loved ones and the home plays a key part as the centrepiece of the festivities. Take inspiration from our simple - and budget-friendly - ways to decorate your home and enhance its wow factor.

6 easy Christmas styling tips for your house

1. Let’s get rockin’ around the Christmas tree

One of the big trends for Christmas 2023 is about embracing vibrant, mismatching colours, and reflecting your personality in your decorations - so go to town with an eclectic style for your tree.

Use bold colours and shiny, retro baubles and materials to make a statement, whether you’ve chosen a natural fir tree or you’re digging out your trusty artificial tree. John Lewis calls this the ‘rainbow time capsule’ look and it makes a nice change from the more traditional green and red tones. Add some prettily wrapped presents with handmade tags under the tree for a classy finishing touch.

2. Get crafty and deck the halls DIY-style

Feeling creative? Or you might simply be on a budget, which is a great opportunity to bring out your artistic side with a trip to your local craft shop for DIY supplies.

Making jewel-toned baubles and a medley of paper stars or snowflakes will help to add a little magic to your new home’s windows. Try personalising your table settings with themes that mean something to your family - nostalgia is another big theme this year.

Use silver or gold spray paint on a collection of pinecones and add them to a decorative bowl or vase on the mantelpiece for an extra festive touch.

3. Opt for greener alternatives

There are lots of ways to make it a green and sustainable Christmas this year. Why not try recycling bits and pieces of old material to create colourful ribbons to hang on your tree or turn old jam jars into pretty candle holders. Empty wine bottles filled with fairy lights are also a great addition to your festive decorating.

Nothing evokes a festive feel quite like your favourite seasonal scents such as clementine and spices. Try using a knife to make small cuts from top to bottom on a selection of clementines, then use wire or twine to hang them on the tree for a pop of colour - creating the most inviting homely fragrance.

4. Turn heads with a creative Christmas wreath

Nothing says Christmas at home quite like the perfect festive wreath. This year, why not opt for something different and create your own using foraged twigs, ferns and pine cones or get creative with a colourful pom-pom version for a knock-out look on your front door. Create the same effect for a rustic table centrepiece and pop in some lovely-smelling eucalyptus.

5. Plant a seasonal hanging basket

If an array of festive lights outside your new property or a lit-up reindeer in the front garden aren’t quite your thing, then why not brighten up the exterior with a pretty hanging basket?

Save the branches you’ve trimmed from the bottom of your Christmas tree to create the perfect base, then add a colourful blend of seasonal blooms and foliage, such as holly branches, ivy, pine boughs, winter berries and pinecones, using wire to secure your display. Add a string of battery-operated fairy lights and you’ll have created a welcoming sight for your guests.

6. Create a warm and inviting atmosphere

Turn down the lights and settle in for your favourite Christmas movies in a cosy and welcoming space. Embrace the Scandi look with soft cushions and throws and select a few key accessories in red, white and natural shades.

Use natural elements such as wood and greenery to create the perfect ‘hygge’ happiness (the Danish term for cosiness). Slow down the pace and create a twinkling atmosphere by filling lanterns with LED fairy lights - or you can never have enough candles.
